How do I make a parrot stand/gym?

I want to make my own parrot stand/gym but need instructions how. I have already bought the wood, and have lots of toys and other things for it, is there a site that tells you the directions, or could you?

Let your imagination run wild. You can try to copy the gyms you see in the pet stores, but you can also do some experimenting. Some birds like ladders to climb, some would rather have several large perches. Perches at several different levels with toys hanging from them let your bird play with the same toy from different areas and try a few ways of getting to the toy. Ropes are also good for climbing up, walking across, and swinging from.

You can try something really tall so your bird can go almost to the ceiling or something wider so he can go from one side of a room to another.

African Grey parrots are popular birds with pet owners because of their intelligence and their ability to talk. As a parrot owner, you may be busy throughout the day trying to teach your African Grey parrot to talk, or breeding a parrot, or teaching your parrot new tricks. But know when it is time to give your parrot a break from all these training stuff and just give the bird some social time. Spend the day with just the two of you doing fun stuff, like you would with your other non-feathered friends.

Let the parrot free in the house and let it choose what it wants to do. My parrot likes to fly from one perch to another across the living room. It also likes to strut on the sofa and mimic sounds from his vocabulary. And while I am reading a book or watching tv, the bird would perch on my lap and pretend it is doing the same.

Purchase new toys for your bird because just like humans, they get bored playing with the same toys over and over again. Rotate them with the old ones so the bird will not get bored. Play interactive games with your bird. You can use ropes, barbell, a towel, a soft ball, or your bird's favorite toy. Prepare some special meal for the bird with fresh vegetables, nuts and fruits that are to your bird's liking. You may even want to hand feed the bird and take it outside in the open air to have an outdoor meal. Just make sure you take precautions that your bird won't fly away and leave you. Let your parrot splash around in the sink or pail of water, or the tub. Or you can make a special perch for your bird to perch on while in the water. Use a squirt bottle to create mists and make the session fun for the bird. There are hundreds of save and fun things to do with your parrot. Just like any other pet, they love the attention from their master. The great thing about it also is that it relieves you and takes the stress out of your system.

How safe is a newspaper toy for African Grey parrots?

hi. My Grey parrot loves to play with newspaper. She likes to rip it apart. Is it alright? Are newspapers safe on parrots? I read few articles in the net which talks about giving newspaper and other old books for grey parrots. Because they like destroying things. Is there any other non toxic stuff which i can give for my bird. Please advice.

Newspaper in the US is printed with lead free baby safe ink. If you doubt my word you can call the paper and ask.While you have them on the phone ask if they sell the newspaper end rolls. This is the plain unprinted paper they take off so they dont have to change the roll in the middle of a run. For a few dollars you can pick up the end rolls if you can get there before all the teachers and hobbyists do and have enough plain paper to last a year

You've moved in with your best friend from college, and she keeps saying how nice it would be to have a bird. She leaves parrot pamphlets on the coffee table. And what about the time she kept you at the pet store for an hour watching a silly parrot when you were ready to go to the food court? But she's a flight attendant and is gone more than she's home. You're working a regular nine to five job. You'll be the one to see to the bird's care. You're not worried about the money, but what does a parrot need to be happy? You know you'll need a parrot cage as a first step, but what kind of cages work best?

A metal parrot cage is the most cost effective and the easiest to clean. Your friend will want to make sure that no wires are sticking out. She will also have to see to it that her parrot can't get its head through the bars of the cage. Parrots like a square parrot cage, so that they can curl up in a corner. You and your friend are going to want to put several perches around the cage so that the bird can get its exercise.

You and your friend will also have to consider food and water containers. Stainless steel is the best material for these containers because they are the nearest to sterilize. Especially for larger parrots a water bottle might be considered. And the water bottle could be used for yet another perch. You will want to rearrange the perches every month or so.

Believe it or not, birds are very intelligent animals that need mental stimulation. That's where bird toys come in. bird toys keep your bird from getting bored while in their cage. You will need to take the parrot out a couple of times a day to play with it. But toys will give the bird things to do while you're out and about. Birds enjoy mirrors; just make sure the mirrors have no sharp edges or anything that might hurt the bird. These pets also like wooden balls, don't let them have anything that might have toxic paints on it. Parrots like puzzle toys. They have even more fun when you put food or treats in the puzzle toys. Birds even like to play with old toilet paper rolls. Ask your pet store salesperson, as they will likely have some advice for you as well. Remember to rotate toys frequently as well.

Having a parrot can be a very rewarding experience if you give them what they need. You will find yourself enjoying your pet more and more. So go out and find the right parrot cage for your place. Get some bird toys. And voila! Your best friend and her new bird will be happy. And so will you!

what kind of wood would i use if i were to build a BIG half pipe for toy skateboards/fingerboards?

this half pipe is gonna be 12 in. tall, 36 in. wide, and 13 in inbetween ramps. It's gonna have a drop in ramp and two higher ramps that gonna be an inch taller than the regular half pipe

I think a heavier grade of balsa wood would probably be best. I have found a site that describes various woods and their properties. You could look through it and find the best wood for your design:

Wooden toys are durable and when properly cared for can last through generations. These simple steps will help you keep your child's wooden toys clean, sanitary and in good condition. We recommend that you clean all of your child's wooden items regularly and thoroughly to help prevent the spread of germs. Because our wooden toys are made of natural materials, it is important to understand the difference between unfinished and finished wooden items. Some of our wooden toys are unfinished. These toys have not been dyed or painted in any way; rather they have been left in their natural state. Our finished wooden items are treated with non-toxic dyes and natural paint finishes.

Daily Cleaning - Both finished and unfinished toys can be wiped clean with a dry cloth for daily maintenance and cleaning. Unfinished toys can be wiped clean with a damp cloth, or sponge to remove dirt, or dust and then wiped dry.

Finished toys can be gently cleaned with a natural, unabrasisve soap and limited water. Once cleaned, the moisture should be wiped away with a dry cloth and the items should be allowed to dry completely before use. A rinse of water and vinegar can be used in finished items to remove crayon marks and oil based discoloration. Regardless of either finish, soaking in water is never recommended as this can cause swelling.

Deep Cleaning- if your wooden items requires deep cleaning a bleach and water solution can be used. The ratio is as follows: 1 part household bleach to 10 parts water. Dampen a cloth in the solution and wipe the toy clean. Rinse quickly with plain water and dry with a cloth and allow the toy to air dry completely before use.

Caring for Wooden Toys

• Avoid leaving your wooden playthings outside for extended periods of time. Sun damage can fade wooden playthings over time and water damage can cause your wood toys to swell and age prematurely.

• Sand down any rough areas with fine sandpaper if the item should become splintered, or scratched.

• Do not expose your wooden items to excessive moisture unless intended as a teether.

• When it's time to clean your wooden toys, try to wipe with a dry cloth first. If a moist cloth is required to remove dirt, dampen the cloth only slightly to clean. Wipe away moisture and allow to air dry.

• Keep in mind that water is the enemy - never soak a wooden plaything as it will absorb the water.

• NEVER clean wooden toys with furniture polish. Furniture polish contains toxic materials that can be harmful if ingested by your child.

• NEVER use harsh household cleaners on wooden items as the chemicals can be absorbed by the toy.

Involve your child in the caring of their wooden play items and they will stay in playing condition for years to come.

Plush Dog

Is it alright to give a puppy/dog a child's plush/stuffed animal toy?

I have a lot of old stuffed animals, but I'm not sure if they are safe for a dog or puppy. Would I be able to give it these, or must I purchase specifically made dog plushes?

We used to give my dogs old stuffed animals all of the time and they were just fine with them. Must got ripped to shreds, with a lot of clean-up for me, but it was worth it b/c they were happy!!!

Difference between Iron and Aluminum for parrot toy pear links with nickel plated coating?

We can get "Pear Links" made with aluminum and nickel plating and or "Pear links" made with iron with nickel plating. Which is better and why? Is Aluminum OK for Birds/parrots. We know zinc is not good for birds already.

go with the iron if you want the toy to last. the big differance is that a good sized parrot can shear right through aluminum, but they will have a much harder time breaking the iron. they can break it, we have had a macaw snap bars off it's cage that were welded on, but it will take a lot more, and should last a lot longer.

does it hurt my puppys ears when i squeak a squeaker toy and it makes my puppy "sing" ?

Sometimes. If it's right up to her ear, it may be that she doesn't like it and it's too loud so she "sings" to get you to stop. But it could also be that she enjoys "singing" to certain things. A lot of dogs like to be vocal when they hear drawn out noises, or just specific noises.

Because times are tough for us and we just got a new puppy I was wondering if you had any ideas to make her some chew toys she has a couple but she loves to bite things! like any golden retriever!! So if you have any websites or just any ideas that would be great!
