How to keep a dog from breaking out of or escaping a Invisible Underground Dog Fence

There are a lot of reasons a dog may break his fence boundary. The first thing I would look at is the dog fence collar. Is the battery good, most batteries are good for four months give or take. Some electronic collars malfunction and will start to eat the battery as soon as two days after it has Benn installed.

In the case the dog fence collar is killing the battery you should contact your local office. Most professional pet systems will have a local office. If there is no local office contact the manufacturer. After you verify the underground invisible dog fence has a good battery check the fit. The fence collar should not be loose both metal posts must make contact with the dogs skin. Thick hair may also prevent contact if that is the case you may need to thin the neck area out a little.

Ok you have checked all that and the dog escapes. Most underground dog fence systems has two adjustments. First is the signal field adjustment, if this is to small most dogs can run out in many cases with out a correction at all. Most dog fence systems have a short delay and if your fence transmitter is only set up to a two foot signal field it needs to be turned up. I would suggest at least six feet on a average size property of a half acre. If there is two or more acres fenced then there is no reason not to have at least a ten foot signal field.

Next is the underground invisible dog fence receiver. Most fence systems can be adjusted for a stronger correction. This means a stronger shock and removing the delay. Some containment systems will have a adjustment on the transmitter or the fence receiver itself. See owners manual for your brand they are all a little different. Invisible dog fence brand is not adjustable by the transmitter or on the receiver you will need to have a tech come out or visit the local office.

If the dog is still leaving the containment area after these adjustments find out where. Most dogs will leave the fence area in the same spot, the driveway is the common. I have found that a tie out in the area where your dog is leaving is very affective. For a period of about two weeks tie the dog out with the fence receiver on. Leave the slack in the tie out long enough to almost get out of the containment area but not all the way out. I know you got the fence so you don't have to use a tie out but a couple of weeks of this is what I have found to be the most affective to break the dogs bad habit and keep your pet at home.

Feeding Habits:

Pet gerbils are usually fed a mixture of seeds, grains, and nuts, high in fatty oils, and will happily eat food from the dinner table such as lettuce, kale, bananas, apples, carrots, spinach, cooked sweet potato or broccoli.

Cage and Bedding:

Any secure container which allows air and light in, has an attachable water bottle with drinking tube and lots of bedding is sufficient for pet gerbils. Examples would be an aquarium (10-gallon minimum) covered with small-holed wire or any wire cage made for rodent pets. Aquariums are easier to clean and the bedding will remain inside as opposed to a cage with openings. Any cage should have a solid floor. Paper covered in a layer of sawdust is a perfect cover for the bottom of the cage. Gerbils like to use cardboard tubes to shred into nesting material then they will turn this into finely shredded bedding material to sleep in. Gerbils love to chew and dig, so make sure to have plenty of cardboard or paper bedding. Corn Cob, Aspen or hardwood shavings and shredded paper towels also make good bedding. Don't use Pine or Cedar wood shavings they can be harmful to gerbils. The cage should be cleaned once a week by replacing the bedding and washing the bottom of the cage with warm water and a liquid soap that's safe for animals. Additionally, provide some kind of untreated piece of wood block or sterilized bone for them to use to keep their teeth short and sharp.

Care:

Gerbils require minimal care and are almost odor free but gerbils do have specific needs. Pet gerbils like to hide and sleep inside enclosed spaces, so it's a good idea to place a small box or broken cup for this purpose. You should never pick a gerbil up by the tail. Gerbils have fragile tails that break off when grabbed or pulled. This is a defense tool in the wild. If the tail breaks off, it never grows back.

The most effective dog bark control collar?

I need to get my pomeranian chihuahua a bark control collar. He is out of control and I don't want to get kicked out of my apartment because of him. What is an effective collar and/or method to use?

I have tried several brands of bark control collars and the only brand I would ever buy again is Tri Tronics. The brands that didn't last for me are Innotek, DT Systems, PetSafe, and Dogtra. None of them lasted a year. The Tri Tronics product is still reliable after three years.

Correcting Your Dog

You have to correct your dog the right way or you will do more harm than good. We use corrections to change a dog's behavior. A correction needs to communicate to your dog it has not done what you wished, by learning what not to do, dogs will quickly learn the behaviors we need to teach them to fit into our daily life.

A correction combines physical or (preferably) emotional pain with the word "NO." The preferred method of correcting your dog is with a squirt bottle: a quick squirt to the face and a loud firm "NO." It is important you squirt the dog in the face or they will not even notice. With many dogs you will want to add a small amount of mouthwash or vinegar to the water in the squirt bottle (just a small amount) so the water is a little more of a deterrent. You should only add a teaspoon for a whole squirt bottle and even less for smaller squirt guns.

It is very important to recognize the difference between correction and punishment. Punishment has nothing to do with teaching your dog proper behavior and everything to do with you venting your anger. Trying to correct a dog for instance for an 'accident' in the house you find even a couple minutes later must be avoided. The dog has long forgotten his transgression and correction (punishment) now will only confuse the dog and make it more anxious and stressed, even more prone to future accidents.

Since timing is so crucial you should have a squirt bottle on your belt or in the immediate vicinity when training a puppy.

Just as important as the correction is the praise immediately following. You have to praise your dog when it has stopped doing the undesirable behavior immediately so it associates your praise with the correct behavior.

For instance, if your dog is barking too much and you correct it, as soon as you shoot your squirt bottle and the dog stops barking, you immediately offer your praise, "Good Quiet, Good Boy!"

A couple more ideas for non-physical corrections are to ignore the dog, refraining from eye contact and to make a loud sound to startle the dog. This can be a stomp of the foot, a snap of the fingers or if you have a few minutes to kill you can make a very effective tool by dropping a hand full of pennies in a can or a water bottle. Shaking that can is now guaranteed to stop your dog from whatever it was doing.

In summary the key aspects to remember are to properly time your correction (you have to catch the dog in the act) and to give praise as soon as the dog stops the unwanted behavior.

Pet tarantula?

I have a pet Rose Hair Tarantula.........yesterday while I was sleeping it dug a hole about 2 inches deep, 3 inches long underground, and 2 inches wide. It was inside of it all day. She is about 7 years old. Why is it doing this? It is the first time it has ever done this.

My dogs have a large fenced in area but it is full of muddy holes, what can we use to fill them in? 10 POINTS!

And also use on the muddy areas that aren't holes? It has to be pet safe. I have 3 Shelties and this time of year is a disaster! Even taking them for walks on our dirt roads to our beach is a muddy mess! I thought of spreading hay or straw. I also thought of wood chips like mulch. Is there a paticular kind that's best? What's the cheapest? And what may not be the cheapest but is the best looking? I just want to make sure that if the dog puts them in their mouth, that it isn't dangerous. HELP! Our backyard looks like c**p! Oh, one other thing! Does anyone know about those underground things to dispose of your dog's feces in? THANKS!

I would fill the deep holes with sand with an inch or two of soil on top planted with a grass.
Sand has to be the cheapest thing and you can call up somewhere and get a truck load. You can buy it in bags too but it sounds like you will need a full truck load. Sand will improve all soil for drainage too.
If you spread wood chips down for walking on I would get cedar chips. Cedar will not rot away like the pine chips.
You might be able to run a pipe under the ground that has many holes in it to catch the water and drain it off.
A few stepping stones on a path could look nice too.

Should i get a dog or an electric fence?

My neighbour's cat keeps coming into my garden and I'm tired of using the hose.

I think you should start by putting in an electric fence. Then put in mines just around the perimiter. Then dig holes and put spikes at the bottome and cover with leaves and cat food. Then put down snares and broken glass. Then purchase ten Dogs and place them around your garden in different area's. If the cat lives and get's past all this I seriously suggest you surrender and becomes the cats slave.

The no bark collars that are cheap - Don't work. The ones that don't use electric stimulation - Don't work. Gimmicks - Don't work. There's no such thing on the planet as a shock collar. There are electric collars, and there are electric no-bark collars. Both are GREAT tools when used correctly by somebody with a brain and common sense and are only inhumane when used by idiots.
A quality no-bark collar is never inhumane because it adjusts the level of correction to suit your dog. In other words the correction (electric stim) intensity is increased each time the dog barks. So it starts off as barely noticeable, and works it's way up, when it's uncomfortable enough for the dog to stop, it has found the perfect correction for your particular dog, not too soft, not too hard. Too soft a correction = ineffective. Too hard of a correction = could damage your dog's nerves/character. BUT quality no-bark collars are idiot proof, charge it, put it on the dog at times when barking would be a problem, tada.
With electric training collars the human needs training on how to use it properly because they're not idiot proof and most people who think they can do it on their own don't have enough common sense to do it...and they end up damaging their dog's character and guess what? The bunny huggers and pretend trainers blame it on the electric collar and not the moron who was holding the remote. A tool is only as good as the person wielding it.

There are some dogs that rarely make a sound, and then there are dogs that keep on barking loudly every time. Don't get it wrong; having dogs bark is far from irritating. It only becomes a pain to listen when they bark and continue to do so for no apparent reason. Though the first solution that comes to mind is to purchase a bark control device, one must understand that telling them to shut up will not be effective on its own. It is important to couple these devices with the appropriate training.

Having to train a dog to stop barking without any device is pretty challenging. Oftentimes it is an untrained dog that makes the loudest noise. If your dog is still untrained, you better start with simple commands like sit and stay. Rewarding them for every successful command is necessary. This will let the dogs focus their attention to you as they await your command. Another way to reduce their barking is to engage them in other activities such as playing or running. The less idle they become, the lesser the barking they will make. If the barking still continues, then that is the time to get bark control equipment.

Ultrasonic Bark Control

First, let's focus on ultrasound devices. These devices stop a dog's barking using a high-pitched sound only he could hear: ultrasound frequency. An example is the ultrasonic remote trainer. This is ideal for dogs whose barking is uncontrollable but can also work with normal ones during training.

There are two buttons: one giving a positive sound while another giving a negative sound. It has a 30-feet range and can be used both indoors and outdoors.

If a dog keeps on barking on a particular spot outside your house, it will not just be you who will have problems but your neighbors as well. In such a case, you can use an outside bark control device. Aside from having an ultrasound player, it also has an audio sensor (focused primarily on dog barks). When the dog makes his first bark, the sensor detects and automatically turns the ultrasound on. This would keep the dog from barking again, thinking that it caused the disrupting high-pitched sound. The sensors can detect a bark and plays the corresponding ultrasonic tone up to 50 feet.

When inside the house, you can use the similar indoor bark control device. It has similar features as the one you would use outside, but it detects and makes ultrasound with a range of 30 feet, since the place is smaller. This is ideal for kitchens or living rooms where the pets usually stay. It also has a manual switch for the ultrasound if you wish to get the attention of your dog whose behavior has become too rowdy.

Static Correction

For extreme cases, you can fit a special bark control collar to a noisy dog. The device often has the same sensor, but it activates a mild static correction instead of ultrasound. It does the same thing without using too much power. Note that the device is still very safe to use for dogs and will only give temporary discomfort.

Electric fences are a great way to safely allow your dog to roam the yard without worry! However, if your dog is too small it could hurt them. If the dog is too big, it may not work and they will run off. I've had this happen many times (in the case of larger dogs running off).
For our little wiener dog, it is the greatest thing in the world! He absolutely ADORES the freedom he gets to roam all around the yard and chase lizards and bugs. I would suggest that you go for it, so long as you believe your fog isn't too big ;D
