If you are trying to developthe optimal environment for your freshwater fish, you're going to want to get the ideal freshwater aquarium water pumps. Your fish will need the best freshwater aquarium pump that you can pay for so that they can get the air and nourishment that they need. They are depending on you to provide them with an environment that is as close to their natural environment as they can get.

Aquarium pumps circulateair throughout your tank to supply your fish with oxygen in a healthy way. Pumps also insure that the water is flowing and moving through the filter. Different aquarium water pumps will effectively do the job of eliminating contaminants and germs from your fish's water. These contaminants can include uneaten fish food and fish excrement. Aquarium pumps can be connected both outside and inside of the tank. Internal pumps are called submersible and external tanks are simply called external.

Aquarium pumps must be supported by a power source that will enable them to create a certain degree of heat in the water. When buying your pump, you can select the wattage most appropriate for the breed of fish that you are caring for.

If you have a small to regular sized aquarium, you will only need one pump. With a large aquarium, some people feel safer having an more pump--used as a backup pump to provide extra power to just be available in case the central pump crashes.

The submersible aquarium pumps hang inside the aquarium close to the top of the unit. They are completely water-proof and usually made of plastics that are safe for your fish like polypropylene. At www.JuliesPetMarket.com they offer aquarium pumps in materials that are safe for you animals.

Aquarium pumps will often have filter mechanisms as well. External aquarium pumps are installed on the outside of the aquarium. There is a tube that connects the pump to the water in the bowl. The tube furnishes the tank water with pressure. External aquarium pumps are best used with smaller aquariums. They don't provide enough pressure and filtering for larger units. It is essential to make sure that you choose the right aquarium pump for your tank.

You want your aquarium pump to have the proper turnover rate that is healthy for your freshwater fish. If the turnover rate of your pump is too low, your fish won't have a reliable constant supply of clean water and air. If you have a closed aquarium, you will need an air pump with a pretty high turnover rate.

Your fish need the proper air and filtering. If they do not have these chief things, they will not survive. Many people make the mistake of thinking that fish are a non-maintenance pet to have. This is not true. Though fish can be low-maintenance pets, there are still some basic things that they require. You must make sure to use the ideal aquarium pump for your needs. On the other end of the spectrum, don't overdo it. If you buy an aquarium pump that is too large and fancy for your tank, it will create an extreme amount of in your tank. Your fish will die from this.

The best thing to do when you're in doubt is to find out the appropriate aquarium pump size from a qualified fish tank vendor or supplier like www.JuliesPetMarket.com which specializes in knowing the critical things when it comes to your aquarium pump needs. They have a friendly staff that has a lot of experience with all species of freshwater fish and their care.

I'm thinking about getting a salt water aquarium, do you have any tips?

I have always wanted to get a large salt water aquarium, but I'm not sure which species of fish to get, or how to add the proper amount of salt to the water. Do you know of a good website that has info for a begginer like me? I also want to have exotic animals in there, but I don't know what type of species are aggresive and things like that.
Thank You!(-;
Are salt water fish much more pricey than fresh water fish? Are they harder to take care of?

The first thing to consider is "if you're an experience fish keeper?" You see, salt water tanks are hard to keep. Not that I'm discouraging you but just like other pets, there are a lot of responsibilities in keeping salt water tanks. Do you have the patience of keeping up with water quality, pH level, salt levels and fish compatibility?

If you think you can do all those responsibilities in your tank, the take the plunge.

If you are into the salt-water fever, you must buy the biggest tank you can afford, let say a 50-gallon tank. The bigger the tank the less maintenance you need. Also, buy the best book you can find in the pet shop. In my opinion, books are better than Internet sites.

The most easiest fish to keep are those considered to be the "hardiest". Most fishes like the Sargent Major and most damsel fish are easy to keep and they are already beautiful in a tank. Stay away on the most "exotic" creatures. These exotics are more harder to keep.

Happy fish keeping!

Saltwater aquariums are intended to be used to keep marine fish, and tend to be more challenging to maintain than freshwater aquariums. This is due to saltwater aquariums supporting a more complex ecosystem, which need more patience and expertise to master. Usually the saltwater aquariums are constructed of glass or acrylic and include biological, chemical and mechanical filters.

Some saltwater aquariums need separate provisions for lighting, hood and stand. In some tanks, heaters too can also be used. Many of the most popular saltwater aquariums will have a capacity ranging from 30 gallons up to 60 gallons. Industrial places that house marine aquariums are generally life sized that are able to provide a close to natural environment.

However, it is wise to keep in mind that the smaller tanks tend to require more maintenance and care. Changes in the water quality can occur more rapidly and can get dirtier faster, thus requiring more cleaning and water changes.

One of the key factors in the maintaining of a saltwater aquarium is the necessity to ensure the proper environmental conditions. This consists of providing the right kind of flora and fauna to maintain the delicate saltwater ecosystem. Other points to monitor include the PH level, alkalinity and the oxygen levels. It is also necessary to maintain the specific gravity between 1.020 and 1.024 and saline levels between 28-32 PPT, both can be tested with a hydrometer.

It is advisable to add living rock into your saltwater aquarium. The live rock is obtain from the ocean is usually inhabited by detrivores and herbivores. Detrivores feed on any biological waste thus maintaining the necessary ecological balance. Other than that you will also find the growth of crab, feather dusters, brittle stars, snail, and sea stars. Bristle worms also act as scavengers and are totally harmless.

Saltwater aquariums are able to accept almost any species of tropical fish. With the development in new filters it is gradually becoming easier to maintain salt water aquariums. The most commonly used filters tend to be hang-on filters and refugium. Hang-on filters are able to assist in the chemical and mechanical filtration whereas refugium helps in biological filtration.

Saltwater aquariums are not for the absolute beginners. It is advisable to have some sort of experience before setting one up. Initially it will be time consuming to get started, but the effort will be well worth it once the tank is fully set-up.

Is there any sand I can use in a saltwater aquarium other than live?

Is there a cheap kind of substrate sand for saltwater aquariums? I dont want to use use live sand this time...it is rather expensive. Anyone know of a plain jane sand that is OK to use?
Live sand is sand that has live organisms growing in it. It is bagged and sold in most pet stores and kick start the cycle of a saltwater aquarium...and here's something that will really make your jaws drop "LIVE ROCK"!!! Maybe you should know what you are talking about before you jump to conclusions that I have been "smoking something". Now if there are any REAL fish people out there that can help instead of trying to be cute....

Any or no substrate will do but it is harder to maintain the biological cycle without substrate and takes a long time to cycle with no live sand to seed it. I would suggest buying regular sand, or beach sand (boiled and well rinsed) and mixing a pound or two of live sand to help speed up the process.

When we initially set up our saltwater aquariums, we think of beautiful vibrantly colored fish swimming around in pristine water. Unfortunately, from time to time anyone involved in the hobby offish keeping will have to deal with cloudy aquarium water. In this article, we will take a look at the most common cloudy aquarium water causes and the corrective action you need to take for each. The color of the cloudy aquarium water causes us to look at a different area of the tank for solutions. Lets go through some of the colors you may see in your aquarium and the under laying problems they point to.

New substrate

Cloudy aquarium water causes the new fish keeper to panic, but it really should not. Lets start by taking a look at your initial tank setup. Your first experience with cloudy aquarium water may very well happen before you ever complete your tank setup or add any fish. Almost any substrate or gravel, you purchase will contain dust. Many new aquarium keepers will either not rinse or not adequately rinse the substrate before adding it to the tank. The solution to this problem, very straight forward. Remove the water from the aquarium and rinse the substrate until the water runs clear. Placing a plate over the substrate when filling the tank will limit the amount of dust released. If cleaning the substrate does not correct your problem: it may be that the pH in your tank is out of balance. Testing the water will most likely show a high PH level. This problem will most likely be resolved by treating the water with conditioners.

Bacteria Bloom

Next, we will take a look at what grey cloudy aquarium water causes us to consider. This problem is most likely a bacteria bloom. Cloudy aquarium water causes us to consider the age of the tank to find a solution. Cloudy water is not an uncommon problem in newer or established tanks, but the causes are different. In a newer aquarium, many times this problem stems from an insufficient population of bacteria. It takes a little while, sometimes up to four months for the helpful bacteria in the gravel to reach sufficient levels to maintain clear water. As the tank ages, this problem should correct itself. If your tank has been established for a while, and you notice gray cloudy aquarium water, the problem is most likely excess nutrients in the water. Cloudy aquarium water causes fish keeper to consider how much they are feeding their fish. Excess uneaten food and plant debris are usually at the root of gray water in aquariums. To correct this problem you need to take a look at how often you are feeding your fish, and whether they are consuming all the food. Adding bottom feeders to your tank and less food to the tank during feedings should correct the problem. You will also want to take a look at the overall condition of your tank. If you are growing, live plants, be sure to prune them and remove any debris in the tank. A few partial water changes would also be helpful here. A word of caution! Do not over do it, when cleaning the gravel. Remember, the goal here is to create a healthy colony of bacteria in the gravel. Extreme cleaning can be counterproductive to the goal.

Algae Bloom

Green cloudy aquarium water causes experienced fish keeper to immediately think - algae. What you need to do is determine the reason for the algae overgrowth. The problem can most likely be traced back to one of four causes. Excess nitrates, too much light, excess nutrients or excess phosphates. Lets take a look at these. As your fish go through their daily routine, they eliminate waste products that increase the ammonia levels in your tank. This ammonia is converted to nitrates by helpful bacteria in the tank. If you are experiencing a spike in nitrate levels, consider whether your tank is overstocked and whether your filtration system is adequate for your tank size. If your tank is located in an area that gets direct sunlight, or you run your aquarium light more than 8 to 10 hours a day, the result can be an algae bloom. This problem is very easy to resolve by reducing the amount of light. Your aquarium is exposed to. Excess nutrients in your tank can usually be traced back to overfeeding. Tackle this problem with a partial water change and reducing the amount of food you put into your aquarium daily. Excess phosphates can also cause cloudy aquarium water. The problem here could be the water you are using in your tank. Test your tap water to see if it is high in phosphates. If you find this to be the case, you will need to use reverse osmosis water or treat your tap water with a phosphate remover prior to using it in your tank. High levels of phosphate can also be the result of overfeeding. A simple rule to remember here is not to feed your fish more than they will consume in five minutes.

Cloudy aquarium water causes stress for many fish keepers, but armed with information this should no longer be your reaction. Partial water changes every 2 to 3 weeks, remembering not to over feed your fish and keeping the gravel clean will go a long way in eliminating this problem.

Happy fish keeping!

What are these tiny brown dots floating around my freshwater aquarium?

I have a 20 gallon freshwater aquarium. Currently, I only have 5 neon tetras and 4 platys in it.

A few months ago I began to see tiny brown dots (thats the best way I can describe them) floating around in my aquarium. I didn't know if they were eggs, or a parasite, or something foreign introduced to the aquarium. A platy had dissapeared a few weeks before this happened, and I couldn't find it anywhere. I thought these brown dots might have been related to it? I treated the tank with anti-pariasite medication, than antibacterial, then antifungal. I unfortunately lost one platy from dropsy, and later a guppy from unknown causes (the guppy dissapeared).

The tank got better eventually, but now a few months later, they are back with a vengance. There must be thousands of them. They're everywhere. There're floating in the water, in the gravel, on the plants(I don't have real plants). I have no idea what they are, or how to get rid of them for good. Please help!

it is BROWN ALGAE they are usually called "diatoms" and happen when you get a new tank or something. you may want to minimize nutrients..or materials in your aquarium..because they build up algae with the fresh water..i sure of that...

By following these easy instructions, setting up your first freshwater aquarium will make the experience much easier. Make sure you have all the equipment you need. Nothing is as frustrating as wanting to put the fish in only to discover you have forgotten something the tank needs in order to operate correctly. Have a list ready and check it off as you get the items.

You will need the right filter for your tank. There are many types of filters including undergravel ones and some are better at helping to maintain the tank than others are. Next, you will need an air pump, gravel for the tank's bottom, plants for decoration and for the fish to be able to hide in, rocks, fish food, a way to test the water for proper balances and the right size net to be able to remove fish. Those are just the basic needs. You can spend a lot of money on keeping up fish, but to get started, it is not that costly.

Know before you bring the aquarium home with you where it is going to sit. Avoid high traffic areas or places in the home where the temperature will promote the growth of bacteria and tank slime. Placing a tank in front of a window might be visually appealing but the sunlight can change the water temperature.

Cleanse the gravel before placing it in the bottom of the tank. Do not use any type of chemical to do this, just rinse it in your kitchen sink. Once the gravel is in place, you can add the decorative rocks. You cannot grab any rock and stick it in the tank as some rocks are not good to use in a tank because they can mess with the balance of the water.

Add plants. Live plants can be used, but keep in mind that not all live plants are suited for a tank and some fish will eat the plants.

Add water to the tank, but know that you cannot just add tap water and then put the fish directly into it. Tap water kills fish because of the chlorine content. You can purchase water treatments to make the water safe for the fish. Some of these treatments allow fish to be added within minutes of treatment, however, for the safety of the fish, once the water is treated, let it sit for a week in order to have the optimal environment.

Once you have done that, you are ready to add fish. The type of fish you add depends on the size of the tank and the species of the fish. For the best results, choose fish that can dwell together and are not aggressive. Some fish prefer to swim in the tank near the gravel while others prefer to swim closer to the surface. This gives each species their own space and helps to promote harmony in the tank.
