pet safe inground radio fence?

I am installing the pet safes inground fence for stubborn dogs and was wondering if anybody had any advice for me on the best way to use this system.I have three dogs one is very well behaved and comes when called she has only left our yard twice the other two are a little harder to handle and when they get out and off their chains they just run and run they do not listen and are very hard to catch.any advice would help

Like ANY non lethal method of physical control, the essence of the system lies in the mind of the controled. Set the system up and make SURE that two things happen, the jolt level is HIGH and the animal KNOWS through much trial and trainning that he will get ZAPPED if he approaches the boundry. If you let him LEARN that the boundry can be breached, either by setting it too low, or by turrning it off, they will learn THAT too.

For your dogs safety, make the consquenceses known early on. Once they are sufficiently fearful of the boundry (the vibration/buzz warning) they will obey it faithfully.

As the city slicker said in response to the country black smiths question of "Hot?" when he picked up a glowing red horseshoe and immediately dropped it on the floor, "No, just don't take me long to look at no horseshoe".

Once they get the drift of the mechanics of the situation, it won't take them long to figure out the boundry lines.

2. Transmitter Unit. Normally a simple plug-in device, the underground dog fence transmitter sends out a continuous signal pulsing through the underground perimeter wire. Result? A tunnel shaped invisible "barrier" is created, leaving an interior "safety zone" for Rover, Daisy or Rin Tin Tin to play within. The electronic pet fence is designed to create a low-impact, easy-to-install and effective pet containment system to keep your dogs safe but space-constrained.

3. Collar Receiver Units. A light weight weather resistant collar is the "messenger" part of the underground dog fence system, where the "action" and training occurs. A simple receiver technology, the underground pet fence collar and controller transmitter can be calibrated or powered up or powered down, in order increase the radius of the "beware don't enter" zone along the perimeter line. After training, dogs quickly learn that the "beep beep beep" sound radiating form their collar means "stay away"...or receive a low voltage shock from the collar's pins, which butt up onto the dog's neck. Don't worry, there's no physical harm or impairment caused by the "corrective" shock, rather your dog experiences a startling sensation which effectively trains, and reminds her where the boundary line exists.

4. And Your Dog. No underground pet fence would be complete without a dog or two to complete the system. Training is gentle, lasting only 10 minutes or so on several sessions, with your dog on a leash, wearing the collar...listening for the tell-tale "beeps" near the line of warning flags inserted into the ground, acting as a visual cue. Gentle walking, coaxing your dog with words of encouragement, leading her gently towards the barrier until the rapid "beeping" followed by a short corrective shock occur. No surprise that mentally nimble situation-solving dogs quick deduce the "meaning" of this newly installed underground do fence, and quickly learn to stay within the "safe zone".

Is there a good wireless instant messaging handheld?

My daughter is very much into communicating with her friends. I have seen an older handheld that is specifically for wireless Instant Messaging, but it only works with AOLs IM.

Personally I'd go for a good PDA, something like a palm TX, with built in Wifi. Use Verichat which is an excellent program, it can connect to any IM service out there.

Does the PetSafe Invisible/wireless fence system work with weimaraner?

I am thinking about getting a female weimaraner puppy and have heard that they can figure out how to jump fences, dig under, ect to get out. I am thinking about installing some sort of wireless fence system and have heard good things about the PetSafe wireless system. Does this system work as well as it sounds, does it keep the animal within the designated boundaries? Can the dog figure out a way to get out, either by jumping, digging, or running through? Please tell me your honest opinion if you have used this system or know of someone who has used it. I need to know it if works before I bring this puppy home. Thank you.

They only broadcast a circular signal around the transmitter at preset diameters. Unless your yard is large enough to contain the circular containment field you choose you will also be overlaping into the neighbor's yard and maybe the street if you set it at a high enough diameter to cover most of your yard. And your dog will not have access to the majority of your yard.

I have had the "invisible" type of fence for over 10 years now.

The "invisible" type of fence is not cruel like some people on this site will tell you. The shock that it gives is mild (and yes, I have been shocked by it). The shock value is immeasurable. The better type of fence systems collars also give a warn beep when the dog gets near the perimeter well before delivering a shock. With proper training the dog will learn quickly where it can and cannot go. Hence it won't get a shock.

Sometimes a conventional fence is not an option. Either due to the cost of fencing a large piece of property or because some housing developments have restrictions on fences.

Sometimes a conventional fence will not contain your dog at all. He can go over it or under it.

If you are looking for an Invisible Fence brand fence you will have to contact a local dealer for a price to install it though I can almost guarantee it will be over $1000.00. If you wish to install it yourself (and it's pretty easy to do in 2 - 3 hours depending on the size of your property) it is available online (but not I/F brand).

The "invisible" type of fence consists of three things. First is the wire which is buried an inch or two into the ground. This wire defines the outer perimeter of the containment area. You can also block off areas (flowerbeds, pools etc) within the containment area. Some experimentation may be necessary in this. Second is the transmitter which is mounted to the wall indoors and connected to the fence wire, and third is the collar that the dog wears. The transmitter sends out an AM radio band signal that the collar will sense if your pet gets to close to the electronic field. The collar will then deliver a correction. Some of the better ones will give a warning beep prior to delivering a shock. Though it is a strong shock it will not harm the pet in any way. Small marker flags are placed along the inner edge of the field about 5 to 10 feet apart during the training period and removed (every other one) as the pet gets used to the fence.

Huskies are escape artists. We have 14 of them. The only thing that I have found that they can't go over or under is invisible type fencing. Some folks say that it doesn't work on Huskies. They don't know what they are talking about. You can't buy the cheap stuff, like what they sell at Lowe's or Home Depot or PetSmart etc. The best I have found is the Smart Dog 2100 by Innotek. You can find it on line at several sites, discounted for less than $170.00 with 1 collar. Extra collars are about $80.00. The kit has everything needed including 500' of wire and flags, enough to do a quarter acre. Expansion kits (500' of wire and flags) are available for $38.00 and will contain a bit more than an acre. The collars are rechargeable (unlike the "Invisible Fence" and most others where you have to buy the proprietary (one place to get it = expensive) batteries every 3 or so months), has battery backup for the transmitter, run through prevention, waterproof, etc. if you are in an area that has a lot of thunderstorms I would consider a lighting protection module ($50.00). Innotek now owns Invisible Fence brand. Be sure to use heat shrink type splices in the wire if needed. They are available at marine supply stores. Do not use the "weatherproof wire nuts" from Lowe's etc. They will not work for this application. Use an edger to dig the "trench" for the wire. The wire only has to be buried 1 or 2 inches down. The yard will “heal” within a few days normally.

The key is taking the time to train your pet. I have known of people to pay big money to install a fence, strap the collar on their dog and then complain that the fence is junk when the dog blows right through it. Also, you do not mention the breed of dog. Longhaired breeds require a longer contact probe on the collar (these are included with the system above). Training may take awhile, one of ours took 18 months (she was a bit stubborn) before we trusted her, most were pretty good in a month or so and we have one that it only took 3 days! The amazing thing is that we can take the collar off, put them on a leash and when we head towards the perimeter their brakes come on immediately! You can also block off areas of the yard that you don't want them in. When hurricane Isabelle came through we had no power for 3 weeks, the terrain was changed with all the fallen trees, and the underground wire for the fence was damaged and NONE of the kids even tried the fence. As I said earlier, the people who say that it doesn't work don't know what they are talking about. We have 14 Huskies (15 until we lost one over the summer due to medical reasons), all free to run around, contained in our 6 acre yard. And no I am not a dealer ..... just a satisfied customer with 14 hardheaded Huskies most of them rescued as adults. We can leave them outside unsupervised for hours with no problems. However, we do not leave them outside when we leave the house.

It will not keep other animals out including the neighbor’s brats. Neither will a 6 foot stockade fence ... this I learned when I lived elsewhere and was attacked by a neighbors dog in my backyard. As far as people being scared of dogs, well if a 15 to 20 foot barrier field isn't enough, neither would a chain link fence be. Besides, if the pet stays on your property who cares if they are unreasonably scared. As far as a dog running through ... well yes, that could happen, however, with proper training it is unlikely. Huskies have an extremely high prey drive. Where we live we have a lot of wildlife, large and small. The kids will line up along the edge of the field and watch the rabbits, geese, deer etc. They won't challenge the fence. The deer and geese have learned where the kids can and cannot go and will stay just outside "Husky country". Sometimes within 5 feet of the kids. As I said it does work. The key is training. That is the most important part of the installation of the fence.

Some people advocate the “wireless” type of fence. You have little control over the coverage area. The other problem with them is "dead" areas caused by obstructions to the signal by things in your walls, trees and such. Your dog WILL find these areas.

Others advocate tying a pet out “because “invisible” fences are so cruel!” Or “why do you want to electrocute your dog?”, however, think about what could your pet do if attacked by another animal while tied? Where is he going to go to get away? At least with an “invisible” fence or a conventional fence he has a decent chance of evading an attacker or fighting back.

Please note though ..... you MUST not leave your dog out 24/7 with the collar on. You MUST bring him in at night and remove the collar. If you do not remove the collar he WILL most likely develop sores were the probes contact the skin which can become infected quickly opening a whole new can of worms.

Is it bad if a Chinchilla eats through a soft fabricy wire window screen?

A friend of mines chinchilla got loose and found her way into the window sill and ended up eating a hole through the mesh screen. Will the mesh screen hurt her in any way?

Chances are she didn't actually eat it, she just chewed her way through it. But, just in case, you need to observe her eating and drinking habits. You also need to be sure that she is pooping normally and peeing as she normally would. Observe her behavior. Does she appear to be in pain, i.e., stretching a lot on her tummy, breathing heavily, lethargic? Any change in her normal, routine behavior would be cause for concern.

Again, as I said, most likely she didn't ingest any, but on the off chance that she did, have an experienced chinchilla vets phone number handy for both regular hours and emergency hours, just in case. If she is off in any way, take her to the vet and get her checked out. It's always better to spend a little bit and be safe, than to wait too long and be sorry.

If you have been experimenting with the Yudu Personal Screen Printing Machine by Provocraft, you may have run into several problems when trying to print your images on Tshirts. One such problem is getting thin lines or small type to come out right.

Here are 3 of the biggest factors making it difficult to get fine details with Yudu screens:

1. The mesh of the screen itself is simply too low resolution to hold the image.
2. The squeegee used to pull the ink is poor quality.
3. The frame of the screen is too flimsy to hold adequate screen tension.

Screen mesh comes in a variety of resolutions (known in the industry as "mesh count") from 33 or less all the way to 300 and higher. Commonly, among screenprinters who don't do a lot of specialty work, three mesh counts are used: a low resolution, a medium, and a high.

Low resolution (around 110 mesh) screens are used for thick inks, light colored inks (like white and athletic gold), and for low detail prints. They are generally easier to get the ink to flow through and less expensive than their higher resolution counterparts.

Medium resolution (around 160 mesh) is used for smaller type (down to about 12 point) and thinner lines (down to about 1 point). If you have a good method for making your stencils or a good burning unit (used for exposing your screens), the medium resolution can serve as a sort of most-purpose screen.

Higher resolution screens range from around 190 and go up from there. They are able to capture very thin lines and small dots, and when used in conjunction with automatic screen printing presses can even achieve photographic quality images.

So what kind of screen comes with the Yudu? Not a medium resolution, but a low resolution mesh count, a 110. Even if the screen was perfect in every other way, a 110 mesh simply does not hold thin lines and small type.

Like screen meshes, squeegee blades also come in a variety of types. While there are many aspects of squeegees, including handle characteristics, blade structure, and composition, our main point here has to do with flexibility. Since the Yudu is designed for manual screenprinting, and it is for general purpose use, let's examine what makes a decently flexible most-purpose squeegee.

The flexibility of a squeegee is known as durometer within the screen printing industry. Most suppliers carry three durometers of blade, a soft (60 durometer), a medium (70), and a hard (80-90). While the softer is used for laying down a larger volume of ink, the harder varieties are used to achieve more detail and also for depositing a thinner layer of ink.

If a screenprinter were to choose a most-purpose squeegee blade for the kinds of screenprinting you are likely to do with the Yudu, he definitely would need one in the scope of the medium or 70 durometer. If you want to be able to pull most general purpose inks through a screen holding most general purpose images, the medium is your best choice. What durometer is the Yudu squeegee? Provocraft doesn't specify, but whatever it is, it's less than 60 for sure, and 60 is not hard enough.

Finally, even if you re-stretched the screen with 160 mesh and bought a professional grade squeegee of medium durometer, there is still yet another problem that hinders quality screenprinting with the Yudu screen: screen tension.

While screen makers do have their own custom tensions for screens it may be sufficient to note that lower tension screens make for smeary imprints and lower quality images. They also make it tougher to do multi-color imprints, which is somewhat moot because the Yudu is not designed for it in all other aspects. Lower tensioned screens lead to a variety of screenprinting issues because, if the mesh is loose enough, it snags and drags along with the squeegee when the print is being executed. Even if the screen has a good stencil with thin lines in it, that line is smeared and dragged along when the squeegee passes, causing a blurry image. How does the Yudu screen hold up when it comes to screen tension? Even fresh out of the box, the Yudu screen is way under-tensioned for even the most casual screenprinter.

Given the limitations described with the screens used with Yudu Personal Screen Printing Machine, one may wish to limit the types of imprints they choose to try using the system. Many hobby screenprinters have expressed a sense of success with the Yudu when they stick to thick lines (3 points or more) and large typefaces (20 point and up) in their designs. It also may be helpful to upgrade the squeegee to one using a professional grade squeegee blade. While your results will vary according to your skill level, it certainly will be easier to get more crisp images and achieve greater success. If you find the aforementioned limits unacceptable, however, you may wish to use a different system with more versatility.

Thoughts on PetSafe's PIF-300 Electric Fence?

we are close to buying the PetSafe Electric Fence (wireless-no cables) for $258 from Petsmart. Anyone have pro/cons on using this?

I think it depends upon how driven your dog is to get out of your yard and what kind of distractions there are outside the "fenced" area. My 90 lb. GSD blows right thru the PetSafe invisible fence we installed. He runs thru the signal before the collar has a chance to pick it up. He goes to visit the neighbors dogs because he is a very social dog. We ended up calling the Invisible Fence company and their system is better for us for a variety of reasons. So, if you have a dog who is driven to get out whether to go see other dogs or to chase a rabbit, cat or squirrel you'd be better off with an Invisible Fence and they can string their wire anywhere you want it.

Many of us with dogs would love to get a fence for our yard. That would allow our dog to have a nice place to run and play without all of the dangers from wandering outside the yard. Fencing in yards can be expensive and very difficult labor, especially for those who have a lot of ground to cover. That is where dog fence technology comes in. There are a few different types of dog fence systems, but we will look specifically at the PetSafe Wireless Dog Fence in this article.

After you plug in the dog fence, all you have to do is set the range you want for your boundary. The system comes with flags to mark the edge of the boundary you set on the PIF-300. This system is the best on the market when it comes to this type of containment. It covers twice the range of any other wireless dog fence. With just one transmitter, you can cover an area up to 180 feet in diameter. That is plenty for most conventional yards. If you have a large area of land you want to cover, the great thing about this dog containment product is that you can purchase additional transmitters which allow you to increase the area of coverage. You can add more than two transmitters to this system. The only thing to remember when considering one of these containment products is that the transmitters are not waterproof, so each needs to be in a safe location where it is out of the weather.

The PetSafe Wireless Dog Fence is also great in the fact that it can be used with more than one pet. You can actually use it with an unlimited number of pets provided they all use the proper receiver collar, which are also available to you. It is also nice to know that the transmitters and collars are available separately just in case you need to replace part of the system and not all of it.

For those of us who like to camp or be outdoors, there are also power inverters available that allow it to be plugged in to your vehicle which is very nice because we all know what kind of troubles our pets can get in when in a new, exciting environment.

Remember that you must properly train your pet when using the PetSafe Wireless Dog Fence just like with anything else we do with them. There is a fantastic training guide and video that goes along with this unit, and it is also available on You Tube. This is a fantastic item, and uses some of the best technology in the business. It is a very humane way to keep your pet close by while giving him some freedom as well, provided the proper training techniques are used. how do I train a dog on a wireless invisible fence?

I want to know how to invisible fence train my beagle..

Walk the perimeter with your dog on a leash. When he tries to go beyond the boundry, give the leash a good tug, & say,"NO!". Do that several times, on different days, at different times. Then put the collar on the dog & do the same thing. Then, towards the end of training, let your dog try to go beyond the boundry. He will get a very unpleasant reminder not to go there. The final step is to 'accidentally' toss on of his toys outside the boundry, & let him go retreive it. Once again, he will get the unpleasant reminder not to go past the bounds, at all!
