If you are trying to developthe optimal environment for your freshwater fish, you're going to want to get the ideal freshwater aquarium water pumps. Your fish will need the best freshwater aquarium pump that you can pay for so that they can get the air and nourishment that they need. They are depending on you to provide them with an environment that is as close to their natural environment as they can get.

Aquarium pumps circulateair throughout your tank to supply your fish with oxygen in a healthy way. Pumps also insure that the water is flowing and moving through the filter. Different aquarium water pumps will effectively do the job of eliminating contaminants and germs from your fish's water. These contaminants can include uneaten fish food and fish excrement. Aquarium pumps can be connected both outside and inside of the tank. Internal pumps are called submersible and external tanks are simply called external.

Aquarium pumps must be supported by a power source that will enable them to create a certain degree of heat in the water. When buying your pump, you can select the wattage most appropriate for the breed of fish that you are caring for.

If you have a small to regular sized aquarium, you will only need one pump. With a large aquarium, some people feel safer having an more pump--used as a backup pump to provide extra power to just be available in case the central pump crashes.

The submersible aquarium pumps hang inside the aquarium close to the top of the unit. They are completely water-proof and usually made of plastics that are safe for your fish like polypropylene. At www.JuliesPetMarket.com they offer aquarium pumps in materials that are safe for you animals.

Aquarium pumps will often have filter mechanisms as well. External aquarium pumps are installed on the outside of the aquarium. There is a tube that connects the pump to the water in the bowl. The tube furnishes the tank water with pressure. External aquarium pumps are best used with smaller aquariums. They don't provide enough pressure and filtering for larger units. It is essential to make sure that you choose the right aquarium pump for your tank.

You want your aquarium pump to have the proper turnover rate that is healthy for your freshwater fish. If the turnover rate of your pump is too low, your fish won't have a reliable constant supply of clean water and air. If you have a closed aquarium, you will need an air pump with a pretty high turnover rate.

Your fish need the proper air and filtering. If they do not have these chief things, they will not survive. Many people make the mistake of thinking that fish are a non-maintenance pet to have. This is not true. Though fish can be low-maintenance pets, there are still some basic things that they require. You must make sure to use the ideal aquarium pump for your needs. On the other end of the spectrum, don't overdo it. If you buy an aquarium pump that is too large and fancy for your tank, it will create an extreme amount of in your tank. Your fish will die from this.

The best thing to do when you're in doubt is to find out the appropriate aquarium pump size from a qualified fish tank vendor or supplier like www.JuliesPetMarket.com which specializes in knowing the critical things when it comes to your aquarium pump needs. They have a friendly staff that has a lot of experience with all species of freshwater fish and their care.

Dog rescues are organizations with the goal of helping dogs find permanent homes. Many dog rescues are geared to a certain type of dog, for instance there is probably a rescue for any breed of dog you can name. There are rescues for basset hounds, Dobermans, Greyhounds, etc. And there are also rescues for the ‘mutts’ of the dog world.

Dog rescues are typically operated by volunteers who are dedicated to the welfare of that breed of dog. They try to find new homes for abandoned, abused or relinquished dogs. The reasons for so many dogs needing homes are numerous. Some dogs may have been strays where no owners could be found for them. The dogs could come from pounds or shelters where their days before being euthanized were numbered. The dogs could simply have been unwanted and relinquished by their owners for reasons unknown. At any rate, there are a great number of dogs who need rescuing and are in need of new homes.

Most dogs found in dog rescues have been examined by a veterinarian and as such have had their shots updated, have been spayed or neutered and have had any medical problems looked after. Some of the dogs may have ongoing medical problems, such as blindness, a missing limb or arthritis, but such conditions are disclosed before they are allowed to be adopted.

With many dog rescues, the dogs have been placed in private ‘foster care’ homes and are looked after by caring people before they are offered for adoption. Such a process ensures that the animal is ready to be placed in a permanent home, and can often dictate what type of home is best suited for that dog.

Now, where do you come in to help dog rescues? Every dog rescue is in need of your help in one way or another. Here are a few ways you can help:

Adoption: If you are looking for a dog to adopt, going to a dog rescue is a great way to get a loving pet. You can find the breed, age and type of dog you want by searching for the appropriate dog rescue. This is the number one way to help in rescuing dogs.

Fostering: If you do not want a permanent pet, but could take one on for a short period of time, fostering may be the way to go for you. You can be an individual or a family with a heart big enough to take one a dog in a safe loving environment until a permanent home can be found.

Transportation: Sometimes a dog that has been relinquished needs to travel from one place or another (for example from a shelter in one city to another city a particular breed dog rescue is located in, or a dog on his way to a permanent home in another state). You could volunteer to transport the dog from one city to another, one state to another, or even just part of the way. Dogs also need transporting from the rescue site to a vet appointment. You could be very helpful in volunteering your services in this way.

Supplies: You could donate things like dog collars, leashes, dog food, bowls, dog toys, crates or whatever else you may think of that dogs would need. Just contact the dog rescue to find out what they may need and let them know you would like to help. You could collect items from friends, family members, garage sales, etc.

Monetary Donations: Since dog rescues are typically run by volunteers, donations are always welcome. You donations would go towards the feeding and housing of the dogs. Adoption fees only go so far, especially when there are so many dogs in need of rescue. And, most donations are tax deductible. Again, contact the rescue to find out how to go about this.

Administration: You could volunteer your services in an office capacity at a dog rescue. You could help process adoption application, keep records for vet and other bills, answer telephones, handle correspondence, etc.

Advertising: One of the most important jobs for dog rescues is trying to find appropriate homes for the dogs. You could volunteer to put up flyers, advertise in newspapers or magazines, or even send out messages on the internet to find people who may be suited to adopt a dog from the dog rescue.

Whichever way you choose to go, dog rescues would be very grateful for any help you give them. Through caring volunteers, the dog rescue benefits and so do the dogs – and the bonus for you is the knowledge that you have helped give a needy dog a loving home.

Adding a pet to your family is a big event and one that needs to be considered carefully. Families that adopt a dog spontaneously often find that they were ill prepared, and these pets frequently end up finding new homes at a later date or even being abandoned. It's important to figure out just what type of dog will suit your family best, and then find one from someone reputable.

Which Breed is Best?

Which breed you choose depends on a variety of factors including personal preference, your family, breed size and temperament, and what you need from a pet. Let's look at these one by one.

Personal Preference: Most people prefer a specific dog breed before they even begin looking for a pet. You might have wanted a Husky from the time you were a child, for example. This doesn't mean that this is your ideal breed, but it is a good place to start.

Family: If you have small children or plan to start a family in the near future, you'll need to consider this when choosing a dog. Certain breeds are particularly well suited to families, such as Golden Retrievers, Labs, and Cocker Spaniels, while others do very well with a single adult owner, including Huskies and German Shepherds.

Size: This is an important consideration if you live in a fairly small space. Remember that the larger the animal, the more space it will need to run around. For apartment living, a St. Bernard isn't a good choice because of its large size, but a terrier might be perfect. Likewise, if you have small children, a very large dog might be a little too much for them to handle. You also need to remember that puppies grow much faster than children, so research the dog's likely size as an adult.

Temperament: Most dog breeds vary widely in their temperaments, but there are certain traits that may run in the blood. Greyhounds, as an example, tend to be highly excitable, bulldogs are loyal and steady, while Huskies tend to have an excess of energy and be very determined. You'll want to select a breed that is best suited to your own temperament and energy level.

What You Need: Are you looking for some quiet companionship on lonely nights, a playmate for your children, or a running partner for your 5 km run each morning? Do you need a dog that will help out with the livestock? Knowing exactly what you need from your dog will help you choose the breed. A miniature poodle won't be a very good running partner, but will tend to be an excellent partner while you watch your favorite television shows.

Health Issues: Unfortunately, there are certain health problems that tend to run in breeds, and you need to know the specific breeds that are prone to health conditions. German Shepherds are most likely to have issues with hip displacement, for example. Once you've narrowed down which breeds you're interested in, you'll want to double check just what you need to expect in the way of health problems. These can sometimes be avoided or minimized by going with a mixed breed dog instead of a pure breed.

All of these factors will help you choose the right dog breed or breeds. Once you know the type of dog you want, it's time to start looking for your newest family member.

Puppy or Adult Dog?

One of the other things that you'll need to consider is whether you want a puppy or an older dog. Both options have pros and cons.

Puppies are very cute and tend to be adopted most often. They are easier to train and have not yet been affected by human behavior, which can turn even a pleasant dog into an angry, dangerous one. However, puppies are also a lot of work. They require vast amounts of attention, no matter what breed you opt for, and they will require strict training if you want to have an adult dog that is fun to be around. Left to their own devices, puppies will pick up a string of unpleasant habits that are difficult to break. Without training, that cute puppy will likely be very difficult as an older animal. If you have the patience and time to train and hang out with a pup, then this could be a good option for you.

Adult dogs are already trained in most cases. If you're looking for a specific temperament, it will be far easier to see this in a dog that is more mature and not as excitable as a puppy, they also require far less attention. Adult dogs usually know their place in the family, will already be familiar with children in many cases, and are easier to settle. There is a downside to adopting an older dog, however. You may find that you have to retrain some bad habits that have been ingrained for years. Also, if the dog has been abused, even the kindest breed could turn out to be snappish and nervous. An adult animal will tend to be cheaper than a puppy, even if purebred, which is another consideration if you are on a budget.

Where to Find Your Dog

Many people look first to pet stores for a dog, but you will probably have better luck and learn more about the dog's history if you go through independent breeders or dog owners. If you are looking for a pure breed dog, make sure you see the paperwork before making your purchase, to ensure the bloodlines are, indeed, pure.

For older dogs, seeing the family and environment they are coming from will help you make a decision on whether or not to adopt. Choose a dog that has been loved and cared for, and you will be able to enjoy your new pet. Only take on an untrained animal if you have experience and the time needed to deal with a dog that needs plenty of attention and training.

Adopting a dog can be a wonderful experience if you are properly prepared. Choose a dog that will fit your lifestyle and family rather than just going for the cutest puppy at the shop. Everyone will be much happier if you do.

Most of think of our pets as our family and if they were to be sick or injured we would want to provide them with the best medical care possible. How to do this without cleaning out our bank account can be a difficult thing. That is why we should have pet health insurance. Pet health insurance is like human health insurance in many ways. There are numerous variable that establish what our premiums will be. In this article we hope to familiarize you with some of the variables you may come across.

Find: Discount Pet Insurance

First, the company you choose will be the number one factor in what your premium will be. They offer many different plans with many different types of coverages. Which company you select and for what reason will determine your premium.

Buy Cheap: Pet Insurance

Secondly, the type of animal you have will also determine your premium. Some animals are cheaper to insure. For instance cats are cheaper than dogs. They tend to get less diseases and usually have less accidents. Dogs as a rule get more illnesses and tend to have more accidents out of the home. Many of the accidents with dogs are caused by the way dogs interact with humans.

Third, the breed of your pet may effect the premium of your policy. Some breeds of both cats and dogs have certain peculiarities to their breed which can end up in larger Vet bills. It could be their ears, their eyes or even their coats and skin types. Bone structure also varies greatly between breed.

After lamenting about the question of whether or not to get a dog and what kind of dog to get, you finally bring the one you choose home. You want very much for your dog to be a very loyal and faithful pet and friend, just like you believe all dogs are to their masters. But just wanting it to be that way will not make your untrained, adorable puppy become a well-behaved dog. But how do you help your wonderfully cute, playful puppy turn into a well-behaved guard dog?

Understand How to Train a Dog

Dog training involves showing your dog how to act, so that you and your dog can live under the same roof happily. There are several different avenues to dog training, like clicker training and behavior training for example. It doesn't matter which exact techniques and tools you use to train your dog, the basic rule is still the same: productive dog training involves using mental preconditioning advances that function by reinforcing productive behavior. In all dog training, treats or rewards are used. When you begin life with your new pet, keep in mind the following training rules.

The sooner the better. Because it is harder to undo acts of behavior and fix unseemly responses,it will be more difficult to train an adult dog that is set in its ways; puppies that are only a month or two old and don't have any established bad habits will be much simpler to train. With adult dogs, behavior modification will require a lot more of your time.

Investments will get you returns. If you have already put in the time, effort and even money to get your dog, then put in the time and effort to train them. You will be happy you took the time to train your dog when you finally have a loving, reliable pet that loves playing with your children, guards your family well, and helps you to relax at the end of the day.

Be Firm and Patient, but not coddling. Do not baby your dog by giving them any treats that they have not earned or deserve. When your dog is young or in training, be careful not to give them treats whenever they want them. The same way as parents can change their cute little angels into spoiled brats, your pet will run all over you if you allow it. When you are training, it is important to be patient. Most importantly, be firm. When you mean no, say it, and reward your pet with a treat only if he does what you ask of him.

Be Consistent with Your Dog. It will just confuse your pet if you give in to their whining today and then ignore it tomorrow. This will only make their training more difficult and complicated. If you are using a device like a clicker to train your dog, you must give them a treat every time you click it, without exception. You can only be clear about what you are asking from your dog if you are consistent. If you are consistent, then your dog will be able to respond correctly and understand what you want.

Dogs are very smart. Even though they are not as smart as humans are, they can learn human-like behavior and show that they understand and acknowledge emotions. A dog will quickly learn who is it's leader and training will be easier.

When you are first starting out and learning how to ride a horse it is important for you to know that choosing the right horse for you is important. It is important that you choose a horse by its temperament not by how pretty it is because in many cases you need a gentle horse to start out riding on and if you get one that is hard to ride then it is going to be more difficult for you to learn. It is easy also when you are learning to ride to think that it is easy and you do not need help because you know what to do even though you are inexperienced.

How to: Ride a Horse

Always listen to the instructor when learning to ride a horse for the first time because there are pitfalls that you can avoid by following there direction. It is easy to get up on the horse and think you are in control but if the horse gets spooked or does not feel comfortable for some reason you can be in big trouble. You will learn what to do when something happens to the horse and they act erratic and you feel helpless. This is where your instructor will train you how to handle a horse in all situations so that you and the horse do not get hurt.

Advice for: Horse Riding Tips

Remember that when you are learning to ride a horse it is important that you first find a horse that is easy going so that you will not have an issue with the horse. Next you need to listen to the instructor so that you will know what to do when you are in an unfamiliar situation and the horse becomes uncomfortable.

You bring home your new canine friend and now it's when the work begins. While it would be wonderful to cuddle with him or her forever, and just play and enjoy him, this is the time to housebreak him and the best way to do this is with the use of a crate or doggie den. And it doesn't matter if you bring home a young or an adult dog.

You dog won't hate you for putting him in a crate if you do it right.

Crate training is based on the idea that dogs carry many of the same instincts as their ancestors, including wolves and wild dogs. Two of those instincts are not to go to the bathroom in your living area and to have a small living area that will offer you protection (aka a den). In the wild, animals do not use the bathroom near their living quarters probably because they realize at an instinctual level that doing so is unhealthy and because the odor is going to attract predators. In the wild, you also want a safe and cozy place to call home.

The crate allows you to use these two instincts to potty train your new pal. The crate acts as the protective den for the dog. He or she may not enjoy it at first, but will eventually come to see it as a place of safety and peace. Because the dog is also going to be considering it a den, she's not going to use it as a toilet either.

How Does it Work?

Confining your dog for a while allows you to sort of predict when he wants to go, so you will be there to take him directly to the appropriate spot and reward him handsomely for doing the right thing in the right place. Once he's used to going to that spot, the crate won't be necessary, but it will remain there for him to hide or have quiet times, or you can use it to travel and take him places, knowing he'll be comfortable inside his little den.

What Kind of Crate to Use?

There are different types of crates for dogs available. Some are made from metal and are more open so the dog can see around him. Others are made from hard plastic and have a metal door on the front. The latter is the type used to fly your dog on an airplane.

Regardless of which type you choose, you want to get a crate that is only large enough for your dog to stand, lie down and turn around in. You don’t want to have too much extra room or else the dog can use part of the crate as a bathroom and defeat the entire purpose.

Associate the Crate with Positive Things

Don’t assume your dog is going to recognize immediately that the crate is his or her new den. You’ll have to make the dog associate being in the crate with something positive, such as tasty treats, favorite toys, and lots of praise. Do this very slowly and avoid leaving the dog alone in the crate for too long before he has become accustomed to it. Negative experiences will make the whole process take longer.

You should also give no affection or attention to the dog if she's whining in the crate. Your natural impulse will be to comfort her but this will only make things worse. Also, do not let her out of the crate until she's quiet. Otherwise, you’ll be rewarding an undesired behavior.

You should put the crate in an area where your family or yourself spend a lot of time, never put it in an isolated place. Put a cushion or a soft blanket inside. Now bring your dog over with lots of praise and a playful tone. Open the door of the crate and secure it so it won't close accidentally.

Now, she has to go into the crate on her own, so encourage her with treats. You can drop some just outside, and leave a trail up to the back of the crate. The goal is to make her go in on her own. This can take a while, so be patient and never force her!

Once she goes in once, you can try to start feeding her right next to the crate, and slowly move her dish all the way to the back of the crate. Once she's comfortable eating all the way inside, start closing the door while she eats and opening it as soon as she's done.

Every time you do this without her getting anxious, increase the time you leave the door closed. If she starts whining, maybe you left it closed too long. Try shortening the time the next time.

But remember: do not open the door when she's whining or you'll ruin everything!

Once she's used to that, start calling her and giving her a treat to go inside. Close the door and stay with her 5 to 10 minutes, then to another room for a few minutes, return and sit quietly a little while longer. Do this a few times a day if possible.

When your pal is used to the crate, start feeding her inside and then wait an hour or so to take her out after her meal, and take her to her potty spot. Wait until she goes. And when she does, give her a treat and then take her for a walk! The walk will be her reward! If you walk her first and then you take her inside after doing her thing, she might get the idea that her walk is over when she goes and you can seer the problem there, right?

This is perfect especially for dogs that live in apartments. They can learn to go on their potty tray, and then the walks are just the icing to the cake! Whatever your circumstances, give crating a try.

Because of their long, thick, fluffy coats, it may seem like grooming a Shetland Sheepdog would be a daunting task. While it does require some dedication and patience, it is not nearly as difficult or time-consuming as one might think. Some owners choose to shave their Shelties to avoid having to groom, but this is not a good option. The Sheltie's thick and lengthy coat helps protect the dog from extreme heat and extreme cold. Shaved dogs are also more susceptible to sunburn and frostbite.

Brushing your Sheltie's coat and undercoat regularly is the single most important aspect of grooming for this breed. You should brush the undercoat first, as it has more difficulty shedding on its own and is most prone to matting. Part the fur of the topcoat and mist the area you plan to brush with water. (It is important to mist or dampen your Sheltie's fur as you brush it due to the risk of breakage on course-coated dogs.) Using a pin brush, brush from head to rump, removing the dead hair as it collects in the brush. Do this all across your Sheltie's body. This technique is referred to as "line brushing."

After removing all the shed fur from the Shetland Sheepdog's undercoat, you can move on to the area called the "skirt." The skirt is the hair on your dog's rump beneath its tail. This hair tends to be more coarse than the rest of the sheepdog's coat and is harder to get a brush through. Gently and carefully using a fine-toothed metal comb can be a better, if slower option for grooming the skirt fur. This comb can also double for similar hair near the ears and on the legs of the Sheltie. Always remember to mist the fur as well, as it will not tug on the dog and make it uncomfortable for them.

After grooming the undercoat and the skirt, you can move on to the topcoat. Continuing to mist the fur before brushing, you can work your way through the topcoat with the same brush as the undercoat (after cleaning out the excess dead fur, of course) to help regain the normal sheen of the Sheltie's coat.

Since their coats are so long and thick, Shetland Sheepdogs are prone to collecting dirt, dust, and grime in their fur. Over bathing can be problematic with any breed, as it can potentially strip the fur and skin of essential oils and minerals that help protect and keep it healthy, but since the Sheltie has so much fur, it is acceptable to bathe more often. Many groomers recommend a bath approximately every two months. If you choose to bathe your Sheltie at home instead of with your groomer, you may have to test out a number of different doggie shampoos before finding one that suits you and your dog's needs best. Always watch for excessive scratching, which can result from dry or irritated skin and is an indication that you need to switch shampoos.

Since you're trying to train your dog, it's

important to understand the different types of

dog training that are available. Knowing this

information will help you make an informed

decision as to the type of dog training methods you want to

use with your own pet. There are naturally ups and

downs to each method, so this is an essential

step.

Training with rewards is an incredibly popular

dog training method. Basically, whenever your dog does

something correctly, you reward the him with a

treat. You want him to recognize that when he does

something good, he will get something good in

return. It can be difficult to be consistent with

the treats, so if you choose this method you need

to be sure to stay consistent.

Choke collar training is another method, though it

is controversial. When the dog pulls away, the

collar will have a choking effect. When they are

walking correctly, it will be loose and

comfortable. The thought is that will train your

dog to behave correctly. Some people do not like

this type of collar because it can result in

injury.

Dog whispering is a dog training method that many

people are intrigued by. It is all about

communicating more effectively with your pet, and

noticing his body language so you can determine

what your dog needs and wants. This type of

communication can be a highly successful training

tool.

Clicker training is another method that is very

effective, and it has its roots in psychology.

Basically, the clicker will be paired with

something, such as a treat. The dog will initially

expect the treat. They get a treat and hear the

clicker -- Eventually, the dog associates the

clicker noise with doing something good, and the

treat can be eliminated.

Whistle training is also very popular. It is an

ultrasonic whistle that a dog can hear, but humans

cannot. This can be a little difficult to use, so

it's important to be trained to use the whistle so

it is as effective as possible.

Dog house training is undoubtedly a difficult task,

and even a little bit intimidating if you are not

sure how to go about it. Examine these different

methods and decide what you think will work best

for you. Then, it's very important to educate

yourself as much as possible so you're able to

start a dog training method and follow through with

it through completion. This will lead to a happy,

healthy life with your dog.
P>

For pet owners who want to find the best pet health insurance company, there are a lot of factors to consider. You might be surprised to learn that the insurance policies for pets are very much like what we humans have. Such policies have annual premiums. The deductible will depend on the age and general health of your dog or cat. And there are various types of coverage plans that you can choose that are tailored for the benefit of your pet.

With so many factors, how do you choose the right pet health insurance plan for YOUR pet? You want what is best for him (or her) and your family. Here are a few questions that you should ask when searching for the pet health insurance health policy that is best for all of you.

1. Ask your vet. Get advice and recommendations from the one you trust the most with your furry friends – your vet. They can explain for you what to look out for and the special needs that your pet might have. In addition, they will explain what programs that they support and if they are members of a certain plan. (Note: Most pet health insurance companies allow all vets to use their service – unlike many human plans, pet health insurance policies do not have “doctor lists”). Hopefully, talking to your vet will ease some of your doubts about pet health and you know that your choice is a good one.

2. Choose a stable company – one that has been around for a few years minimum. The business of pet insurance has been around in the United States for over 25 years. As you ask around about the available pet health insurance policies just do a simple background check about the company’s stability. You need to make sure that your money and your pets health will be in the right hands.

3. Look closely at the coverage of the pet insurance plan. The broader it is, the better. Choose the one that offers coverage for some chronic conditions like diabetes and other forms of allergies, dental situations and prescription drugs.

4. Make sure that the pet health insurance company has a veterinarian employed by them. If they are to insure your pet, you want to be sure that they have someone who will understand your concerns and needs regarding your pet.

5. The insurance provider must give you leeway in terms of your choice for veterinary professionals. The policy must not limit your choices of hospitals or veterinarians where you can bring your pets when certain situations or emergencies arise.

6. You must be sure that the insurance will be ready for use upon the effective date from its approval and issuance. Do not choose insurance providers that will make you wait a certain time before you can start using the policy that you have already paid for. There is, usually, a

7. All transactions must be transparent. Make sure that the company provides you with the important information about every transaction that you have to deal with them. Ask them about everything that you want to know, the coverage, the benefits, the payment schedules and other things that you want to be clear about.

These are just a few of the questions that you must take into consideration when you are looking for pet health. Most pet health insurance companies have online registration site that will include a FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) sections. Be sure to read these carefully as, be assured, you’re not the only one with the same questions!

Choosing adoption is a big step. I would like to discuss a variety of topics that will help with making the decision to adopt an informed, thought provoking one. The goal of this article is to provide information and resources that will help in choosing adoption. The result, I hope, is to help any child be placed in a home where they are wanted, appreciated and loved and to provide any caring adult, tools they can utilize to make choosing adoption a reality.

Let’s begin by asking yourself, “Am I ready?”. This is a logical place to start because by choosing adoption you are choosing to change the dynamics of your life forever. This of course is said not to scare you away from the idea of adoption but to merely point out the realization of this fact. Once you have done your homework and a lot of soul searching and are still choosing to adopt, you may have come across the most rewarding experience of your lifetime.

With choosing adoption comes many decisions immediately following: What adoption agency will I use? Do I want to adopt a boy or a girl? When I adopt, will the child be an infant? 5 yrs. old? or a teenager? These are all important questions that need to be addressed.

Adoption Agencies

One must be very careful when choosing adoption agencies for obvious reasons. The search for one on the internet, you may find is a challenge. I have done some homework and have found a couple of links that may be helpful:

http://www.adoption.com – In the topics menu under adopting click “guide”
http://www.comeunity.com/ - Great for resources

Do I want a boy or do I want a girl?

My wife and I have raised 3 boys and 2 girls and I must say that it is a different experience one from the other, but rewarding all the same. This is a choice that must be thought out and discussed when choosing to adopt. Much has been written regarding adopting a boy vs. a girl and I would encourage you to visit the websites listed above as a source of information. Ultimately, this is a matter of preference. The dedication and commitment to love another human being far out weighs this choice you must make.

Through communication with your spouse, a decision should be reached. Just remember, not everyone gets to choose, so this should be a pleasant choice to make.

Choosing the age of the child

Now this is a tough one. On average more infant girls are adopted than any other age/gender combination. But looking into the various challenge of each age group, may prove to be helpful. This is where you choose how the dynamics of your life will change. Really give this decision consideration when choosing to adopt.

Responsibilities and what to expect by age group:

Infant: very dependent, may keep you up at night, feeding, changing diapers, bathing, washing, wiping, burping, parent/child play time, reading time

1-3 yrs: Crawling, walking, teeth brushing, beginning to talk, bathing, exploring, breaking household items, parent/child play time, reading time, lots of energy

3-5 yrs: Learning ABC's, asks why a lot, exploring, human sponges, parent/child play time, bathing, child making friends, child brushing their own teeth with assistance from parents, reading time (both child and parent read)

6-8 yrs: Learning, attention span improving, lots of energy, children should be brushing their own teeth, parent child play time, wanting to do more on their own, reading time, teach them how to do chores that are age appropriate, may want to begin organized sports or activities

9-11 yrs: Study habits, learning how to do for themselves, increased chore responsibility, becoming more independent, communicating regularly
