Aquarium thermometers question?
Is it OK to only have a thermometer outside of the aquarium? How far off will it read?
Well, i just installed my heater last night, I have a regular house thermometer up against the tank that says it's 65, but the heater is turned up to 75! How can I make sure it's the right temperature in the water?
I think you mean those adhesive thermometers that attach to the outside glass of the aquarium.
My problem with them is that they measure the temperature of the glass, not of the water inside.
If you have a heater (or chiller) in the tank, the difference in these temperatures can be substantial.
However, they will give you a general idea if your water temperature is high or low, and they are easier to read than some of the floating thermometers.
I really like the small, battery-powered, digital thermometers that have come out in recent years. They give you the best of both worlds, because they have a temperature probe inside the tank, and a display of the temperature on the front of the tank.

P.S.: Give your new heater some time to bring the water temperature up what you have it set for. If your water is still too cold after about three days, start turning up the heater in small increments, about one adjustment per day, until you get the temperature where you want it. The temperature on the heater dial may be different from that on your thermometer, for a number of reasons. The thermometer (one in the water, not outside the tank) is much more trustworthy.
