Anyone have issues using sand with Tetra whisper filters?

Recently I have went through two Tetra Whisper internal filters for my 4 gallon aquarium. The filters appear to be working just fine until one day they suddenly begin to make horrible noises. I have emptied them and took them apart to see if sand from my aquarium clogged it, but I don't see sand in there. These filters had been working just fine so I don't know what is wrong with them, nor do I want to buy a new one until I figure out what is happening. Does anyone know if you are not supposed to use an internal filter with sand? Or has anyone else had the obnoxiously loud Whisper filter? Thanks for any help you can give me.

you can use them with sand as long as the filter intake is not really close to the sand. It could just be the filter type. sometimes they make those things cheap so that you have to come back and buy another one when it breaks.

All i know is, if it's really loud, there's something wrong. you could always try a different brand or style of filter, and see if it changes anything.
